Title: Bridgetender {On - Call}
Pay: $15.75/hr.
Schedule: On call, shifts vary, typically 2-3 per month

SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for the proper and safe operation of a drawbridge for the passage of vessels in accordance with Federal Regulations and established rules and procedures issued by the Martin County Public Works Department.
In the event of a natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area, the employee may be required to perform emergency duties as directed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Raises and lowers span of draw bridge to allow passage of high marine traffic.
Sounds warning siren, flashes warning lights and drops gates.
Maintains a daily log of drawbridge openings and records other information and data as directed.
Prepares monthly and summary reports as required.
Notifies and files reports on all accidents involving the bridge and/or operation of the bridge.
Observes mechanical and electrical equipment on the bridge to ensure it is in good working order and notifies the Public Works Department when malfunctions occur and deficiencies are found.
Turns bridge and fender navigation lights on and off at proper times and replaces burned out bulbs and fuses as necessary.
Operates bridge and auxiliary power unit on a weekly basis to ensure it is in good working order and ready for use in case of power failure.
Performs custodial and minor maintenance work on and around bridge and bridge house.
Performs work related to this job description as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of Federal Regulations, rules and procedures regarding the proper and safe operation of drawbridge.
Knowledge of basic VHF radio operation ability and skill in performing minor mechanical repairs and maintenance.
Ability to communicate effectively and to submit clear, concise information Ability and skill in performing minor mechanical repairs and maintenance.
Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
Ability to hear and see, with or without accommodation, to ensure safe reaction time. Physical strength and agility to assist in emergency repairs.
Ability to lift up to fifty (50) pounds from ground to waist high.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school or possession of an acceptable equivalency diploma. Basic reading and writing skills and ability to perform basic mathematical calculations.
Additional qualifying education and/or experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted one for the other on a year for year basis.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Must possess a valid Class E or higher Florida Driver’s License
