Position: HVAC Technician
Schedule: Monday - Friday - Hours to be determined.
Pay: $26.92/hr.
Location: Martin County General Services Department located @ 2555 SE Avenger Circle, Stuart, FL. 34996

Must be able to pass criminal background, drug testing and MVR check 

This will be a contract position with reSource Government Services and not a direct hire position with Martin County.



Summary:

Performs at the journeyman level performing skilled work in the repair, installation and maintenance on all complex heating, ventilation, air conditioning units, chillers and air handlers in county-owned facilities.  The incumbent in this position works under the direction of the Lead HVAC Technician or higher-level supervisor.
 
This position will be subject to a Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) security clearance due to its access to the various criminal justice system operations.

This position may require you to have a take-home vehicle for purposes of responding to departmental emergency situations. An employee is covered under the County’s auto insurance policy when operating the vehicle in the scope of his or her employment. Employees are encouraged to purchase a rider of endorsement to their personal automobile policy to provide coverage for operating a County vehicle for personal use including driving to and from work.
 
In the event of a natural or man-made disaster that may threaten the area, the employee may be required to perform emergency duties as directed.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

Installs and repairs heating, gas, ventilation, and refrigeration systems, including drinking fountains, refrigerated air conditioning systems, gas appliances and evaporative coolers.
 
Makes initial settings and final adjustments of refrigeration and air conditioning systems; modifies existing installations.
 
Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, calibrates and maintains chillers, direct expansion systems, electric blast coils, immersion coils, pumps, fans, starters and related equipment.
 
Troubleshoots, repairs and/or replaces pneumatic and electrical controls, ignition assemblies, heating elements, exhaust fans and hoods; monitors and recharges refrigerant systems.
 
Performs routine maintenance, including cleaning systems and duct work; replaces filters and pads; adjusts belts; replaces or repairs motors and supply lines; checks and repairs leaks in heating systems or gas lines; conditions safety valves; recharges refrigerant systems.
 
Responds to emergencies and ability to be on call 24/7 as assigned by supervisor.
 
Designs and implements energy management devices on present systems.
 
Performs work related to this job description as required.
 
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Thorough knowledge of air conditioning code requirements. 
 
Thorough knowledge of installation and repair practices in the air conditioning industry.
 
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the work.
 
Knowledge of commercial air conditioning and refrigeration units.
 
Knowledge of commercial heating systems.
 
Skill in the care and use of tools and equipment essential for the repair of air conditioning equipment.
 
Ability to diagnose air conditioning problems.
 
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Graduation from high school or an acceptable equivalency diploma and three (3) years’ experience in the air conditioning field with special emphasis on trouble-shooting and service experience.

Additional qualifying education and/or experience which provide the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted one for the other on a year for year basis.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: 
Must possess a valid Florida Driver’s License.

Possession of a Florida County Heating Ventilation Air Conditioning (HVAC) Journeyman’s license preferred.

Must possess an EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Work is performed indoors as well as outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions. 

May involve working with and/or supervising jail inmate’s trustees.

May involve working in a correctional environment which includes jail inmates.

Occasionally inside, cold, wet, dusty, dirty, working in cramped quarters, working around radiant energy, working in toxic conditions, exposed to insects, working on slippery surfaces. 

Frequently dry, working with adequate ventilation, working around vibrations, exposed to burns, working on irregular surfaces. 

Very frequently outside, hot, humid, noisy, working with adequate lighting, exposed to mechanical and electrical hazards, moving objects/machinery, working from high places, working with/around others, exposed to chemicals.
 
Constantly exposed to sudden temperature changes. 

This position is included in the County’s Hearing Conservation Program due to routine exposure to high noise levels. Employees in this role are expected to wear hearing protection and participate in periodic hearing evaluations, in alignment with best practice guidelines based on OSHA recommendations.
